Thanks benbowman for your suggestion. However adding "nomodeset single" does not bring my 2.6.31-21 back to life (it's in an installation upgraded from 9.10), and the booting sequence still hangs at around [5.61xxxx] second, when mounting the /home partition, and then the prompt won't show up, just as it behaves earlier.
Any more ideas to get out of this hell is appreciated.
