When I open Keyboard Shortcuts, and press S or M when assigning a shortcut to an action, the following message appears:
The shortcut "S" cannot be used because it will become impossible to type using this key. Please try with a key such as Control, Alt or Shift at the same time. So Gnome at least sees the key presses correctly, without any modifiers.
