So, it seems Pango font backend is in a very bad shape, so we should not use it by default. One of the bugs I've seen myself is https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18546. So, discussing it with Xan he said that we should either fix it in the freetype backend, if that's simple enough, or switch to using HarfBuzz for text layout.
