slightly more clarification: this was cd image installed onto a usb stick. also, had an SD card w/ an image on it inserted, but machine won't boot from it, so was booting from the usb stick.
even though it won't boot from it, the SD card shows up as /dev/sdb (and /dev/sdb1).
