I cannot reproduce the kicker hang issue here (tried different input methods). Do you use beryl (seen icon on desktop)? Can you try w/o beryl active?
I have reproduce the problem from screen shot: this seems to be related to placement of quick search results bar of strigi and it only happens if you have kicker panel on top. If you move kicker panel to the bottom, it should work.
