Downloaded new plymouth from the vorlon ppa and did the "sudo touch /forcefsck" test. Plymouth gets to "1 of 2 partitions, at 72%." then the screen blacks out for 5 seconds. then GDM login appears. I logged in and checked / - the forcefsck file is gone.
