I did an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday and received a new version of hplip (3.10.2-2ubuntu2). unfortunately, this did not fix my problem; the scanner is still only detected when logged in as root (for example by scanimage -L) but not as a regular user. In addition running sane as root still crashes.
