Perhaps 554079 should be moved/merged to this bug? Please see my comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/554079/comments/53 I ssh'ed into the machine, killed plymouthd (after all disk activity stopped), and gdm comes up and I could then continue to login w/o issue.
