As a part of my job involves heavy backend development on web systems, which
are usually accessible via FTP, this would be a feature I would really like
to see enter Nautilus.

I would be willing to look into writing a patch for this, but need to know
more information on where this problem lies. Is anyone aware of whether this
is a nautilus bug or an issue with lack of support in gvfsd-ftp? If this is
merely a lack of Nautilus support it is likely to be significantly easier to
implement than writing full support for this feature into gvfs as well.
