I already tried both Ambiance and Radiance - no difference.

I am not sure that I have a guest account, but if I can find it or turn
it on, I will try that.

I have also tried logging in to normal GNOME, which works perfectly and
looks fine. However, GNOME makes very sparing use of transparency
effects & text is usually displayed against a light background in
windows and so on. In the netbook launcher, the main window is
transparent but shaded darker than the wallpaper, and the highlighted
selection is darker still, making text almost invisible.

I have desktop effects set to "none". I have tried enabling them (in
"normal" rather than "extra" mode), and transparency in terminal windows
& of inactive title bars works, but it is too slow to be usable, so I
disabled it again. It made no difference to font colours.
