I went back and burned a CD with the last Lucid Alpha release. Used the same CD/DVD drive as with the beta ISO.
Installation of the Alpha release ISO works ! So it appears something broke for installation between the Alpha and Beta releases. FYI -- using the Beta ISO file to install the installation "always" fails due to an I/O error when the system is about 60% done COPYing files to the target hard disk.
