James, I think you may need to unset the gconf key. If you set a gconf key as a user, then that setting stays in place until you change it. When we update a package, we only update the system-default settings. User settings don't get touched, generally. So, if you played with the gconf setting previously, you will retain what you set until you *unset* that key.
