I'll try to remember. It's been a while. From what I remember it turned out that the ubuntu 3D screensavers were still switched on and caused the crash every time I left the computer long enough for them to activate. I was using the opensource ati driver. I used XGL because when I tried AIGLX it wouldn't work. Things have been working fine since. I'm still using edgy so I'm not sure if it happens in feisty.
