I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T400s running Ubuntu 9.10 and a co-worker has the same laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 and we have both been suffering from the external microphone not working. None of the solutions mentioned above helped.
We ended up removing pulseaudio and installing esound.
