I did some googling. <http://www.loci.wisc.edu/visbio/data.html> has a
couple of zip files with bio-rad samples. Like I sort of suspected,
typical values for image size are more like 512 x 512 and maybe a dozen
images tops in a file; the numbers reported by file(1) above are way
outside the typical range and would, I believe, require absolutely huge
files. So maybe some simple sanity checks could be put in instead, or as
well.
