Martin Pitt in comment #72 linked to the commit with instructions on how to fix this issue. Polling is not disabled by default because it stops media detection and does not cause issues for most people. Please follow his instructions to disable polling using udev.
Note that udev has replaced hal in this regard in Lucid. The fdi file that hal-disable-polling will have no effect.
