I've discovered that I can install everything from the command-line
using apt-get without needing update-updmap. The error appears to be
specific to using "Update Manager" and "Synaptic" (sorry I didn't
mention Synaptic in the last comment).

Even after installing some of texlive with apt-get, trying to add more
through Synaptic (I tested texlive-science) produces the same error.
Using the update-updmap or updmap --disable classicovn.map didn't fix
the error for Synaptic, but going back to apt-get, I was able to install
it.
