   * Set bogus passwd in pam_mysql.conf so that root won't be able to
     log as root without password
   * Added patch to link against libpam. (closes: #418500). Kudos to
     Christian Hammers for patch

Looks like it's fixed since Karmic - closing this bug.
Please reopen it or file a new one if you experience the same issue on Karmic 
or Lucid (10.04).
