@Andy I ran a diff against the patch I created (see comment #9) and the patch that you have posted at the link in comment #11, since the former did not result in a "serious kernel problem." The only difference that I can see that would be of any consequence is where I used "u32 bits, u64 *value64", you used u32 bits, acpi_integer *value64 (lines 41 and 47 respectively). BUT, I am most definitely not a coder, so I'm attaching the diff for you to look at.
