I tried replacing gdm with kdm. It didn't really change much, but kdm shows the following error within the font failures: ../../src/xcb_lock.c:28: _XCBUnlockDisplay: Assertion `xcb_get_request_sent(dpy->xcb->connection) == dpy->request' failed.
I've had problems with libxcb-xlib before so I installed source and build all deb files belonging to it and overwrote the existing with the new files. No effect though. I then 'apt-get remove xserver-xorg' and 'apt-get autoremove' and installed xserver-xorg again afterwards. I had to reinstall nvidia-glx as well.
