shira, what you are describing is the grub edit screen, that's is not
the recovery mode.

When your machine boots, you get the grub boot menu.  At the bottom it
says to use the up/down keys to select which entry is highlighted.  Use
those keys to select the line with (recovery mode) at the end of the
line.  Once that is selected, press the enter key - this will boot into
recovery mode.  You will see lots of text scrolling up the screen then
the background will go blue and you'll see the "Recovery Menu".  Use the
up/down keys to move the red highlight to  select the "root" line then
press the enter key.  At the bottom of the screen you will no have a
root shell prompt.  Change you password from there. You can reboot the
machine after that using the reboot command.
