It seems my bug report may be similiar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/linux/+bug/538377 since I also have a Radeon HD3450 connected via HDMI. However, that reporter seems to experience intermittent issues and in my case the monitor never gets output.
I see there is a recommendation in that report to use the new_pll=0 kernel parameter. I can try that and if there is a newer kernel available somewhere I can try that, too.
