I cannot reproduce the problem. I tried to create a new
AppSocket/JetDirect by typing in an IP address (both of an existing
printer and a non-existing IP), selecting a printer from the list of
auto-detected printers (and choosing there both simple
AppSocket/JetDirect and AppSocket/JetDirect via DNS-SD). In all cases
the model was correctly recognized and the driver correctly suggested. I
could always complete the wizard.

Please tell me, which manufacturer and model is your printer exactly?
Which is the printer's IP address.

Run also the following commands in a terminal window and post the
output:

lpinfo -l -v
lpstat -v
ifconfig

Attach also your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file.
