Nevermind... thought I had found the problem.. the grub-install script
builds the core image with the fs module first, but that seems to be ok,
as long as lvm is after the disk and partition modules, which it is.

- Grub builds core image so it can't handle root on lvm or raid
+ Grub keeps reinstalling the core image without lvm module, leaving system 
unbootable
