same issue on my eee-pc 1000 running the latest update of lucid-netbook beta; the normal boot screen doesn't come up until just a moment before login, and after the login screen everything appears normal (though occasionally the bugtracker (?) applet identifies a problem with plymouthd). I also get the "broken pipe" message when shutting down the computer, before it goes into the graphical shutdown screen. Can't find anything in log files about this, though.
