Bug still present on Karmic (pidgin version 2.6.2-1ubuntu7.2). Since nm applet for KDE doesn't work correctly with my 3G modem, I'm using wvdial to connect.
One way I've found to force pidgin to connect is going to Accounts->Manage Accounts (or hitting Ctrl-A) and click twice on the Enable box of each of my accounts, so it will connect when the account is enabled again.
