Hmm, could you confirm that you're outputting on analog stereo, by selecting that in the gnome volume control (hardware tab, select creative soundcard, then select "analog stereo output" or "analog stereo duplex"), then try again and supply a pulseaudio log so we can confirm that you actually selected that and that nothing changed the profile back to spdif?
