Some other notes:
The device operates just fine in winXP and win7.  The standard usb port on the 
front of the card reader works just fine.  Other ports do not.  When the 
machine is booting with the card reader plugged in, as soon as grub starts 
loading, the lights on the mouse and keyboard go out (indicative of the drivers 
not being loaded).  After you get to the desktop and wait about 3 minutes, the 
lights come on and the keyboard and mouse are functional, but the applets on 
the top right menubar (network, volume, login, email etc) don't work for about 
another minute.

Hopefully that is not too much info.
