I took filehighlight.ini from sources as a quick fix for the
highlighting issue (apt-get source mc; sudo cp
mc-4.7.0/misc/filehighlight.ini /etc/mc).

As for thicker borders, you can try mc skins (for example  "mc -S
featured" or "mc -S double-lines") - it works for me.
