Investigation into the code reveals that *I think* the issue is that
evince-gtk does not handle compression at all and that somehow
mozplugger is compressing (or making appear compressed anyway) the pdf
files.

The best fix for this is to allow evince to replace evince-gtk without
breaking xubuntu-desktop.

Unless the evince-gtk people want to add to their package, but that
seems counter to its purpose.
