Jane,

For easier debugging, we would like you to reproduce this symptom using
the latest alsa-driver snapshot. Please add the ubuntu-audio-dev ppa[0],
ensure that you are running 2.6.32-18-generic (from uname -r) installed,
install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r), then reboot.

Not directly related, but reading your machine's codec dump
(Card0.Codecs.codec.0.txt) has revealed another bug (should be reported
separately using ubuntu-bug alsa-base) that your PCM level is
overdriven; the offset to 0 dB (which should correspond to 100%) is
0x3d, but the number of steps is 0x3f, which means anything set at 100%
will sound distorted.
