Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

Indicator applet doesn't show me any tooltips. I believe this is a
regression from Karmic, as then, the volume and battery icons would
display tooltips when hovered over, reporting the current system volume
and battery life remaining, respectively. I'm reasonably sure it's
because indicator-applet has replaced those two pieces of software, as
they used to live in the panel as separate applications.

It's useful to have when adjusting the volume by hovering the mouse over
the icon, then scrolling the mouse wheel. It provides instant, specific
feedback as to the current level of the volume. It's also a way for new
users to get acquainted with the functions that each of the panel
applets provide without having to blindly click. The clock applet does
this, with the tooltip "Click to view your appointments and tasks" when
the user hovers the mouse over the date or time.

Release: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Version: indicator-applet 0.3.4-0ubuntu1
Expected: Tooltips to appear.
Happened: Nothing!

** Affects: indicator-applet (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
