I am running Lucid beta1 and I had the same problem so as you suggested I booted using liveCD Karmic 9.10 and was able to format the sd card. Proceeded to retry this with Lucid and this time it did work just fine. The funny thing is that prior this I tried over a dozen times and could not? There must a be a reason for this I believe that prior it was msdos fat after the live cd format it was fat32 is this a reason?
