I haven't had a chance to go further. I opened the file in Windows with
Open Office 3.0, unprotected it and saved it with a new name. I then
loaded it in 3.1 under Linux, protected it and saved it and it works. I
won't know if I can repeat the condition. ONe strange thing now is that
I can open it on my notebook without entering a passsword although it
claims to be protected. I even removed the protection and redid it with
no effect. I plan to change this file to another spreadsheet or program
becauswe I don't want it to be unprotected on the notebook which could
be lost and picked up by anyone although they would have to know the
Linux password to get in or remove the hard drive and install it
somewhere else to get at the file (or hack the random password.) I don't
intend to used Open Office Calc for any file that needs to be secure.

Thanks for your concern Bryan.
