@Mary: Your dmesg doesn't show any errors, so from what I've read that's the sign that everything is right at the driver level. I will submit the patch upstream to the driver maintainer so it can be included in the kernel.
Run "gpointing-device-settings &" in a terminal to try it out. You may see some stuff printed out in the terminal, but you can ignore it. Also, can you run lshal with the test kernel and attach the output here?
