The issue here is there are many programs that where (or still are compiled) with gcc 3.3. This is mainly done by vendors to ensure compatibility across all distributions old or newer. The problem is newer distros are requiring vendors recompile with gcc 4. Though there are still many older programs out there that will not get recompiled.
For now the best way to get around this issue is to follow the instructions by Luke in post #27.
