Hi Mark! Just to clarify it: it wasn't me with whom you have this issue discussed. I (and hope the others too) accept that you have the right reasons to ban tooltips, but you must also accept the fact that with this move you also take away functionality. Rapid info gathering is important for some of us, and having to click on icons ruins the whole point. For now, it's just another step in the long way of Gnome taking away features :P
And to be constructive too: Why not using Notify-OSD instead of tooltips? It's coherent, renders nicely, can show all the information needed and it's Ubuntu's own invention.
