I have this problem also, but in Gnome. I assume this is shared functionality, and isn't KDE or gnome specific
With Karmic, the brightness functionality worked fine. In lucid, so far, as of very late alpha 3 (updated fully on 19th of March) The 'make brighter' key combination seems to work but the 'make less bright' doesn't. In both cases I see the notification box pop up, but in the case of 'make less bright' it just shows. Since my brightness is on FULL already, 'make brighter' makes that 'hit the end' bump kind of look on the notification.
