Adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters seems to have fixed this for me. Probably best not to mark this as a dupe of 538344 just yet since Russel reports he is seeing it with an Intel card...?
538344 does mention that kernel 2.6.34 pre rc1 seems to fix the problem.
