Suspend is working now. 
However, not very convenient handling of screens remains. 

Current configuration:

nvidia driver from http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu repository:
195.36.03-0ubuntu1~karmic~nvidiavdpauppa2

kernel:
$ uname -a
Linux ipnp-n45 2.6.31-20-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 09:02:26 UTC 2010 
x86_64 GNU/Linux

I didn't have much time to figure out which update made the difference.
I may do it later, if anyone is interested.
