I tested the Mainline kernel, both yesterday's daily build (2.6.34-999.201003141003) and with the RC1 (2.6.34-020634rc1) and both of them had a kernel panic just after GRUB.
I'm writing from Lucid alpha 3, which is running as live CD. The load is still high, but not as high as it used to be.
