Update FWIW: the problem, at least in my env seems to be fixed.
I'm running Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10) with regular updates these days.
Kernel is:

Xorg is:
X.Org X Server 1.6.4

I would like to confirm that keyboard responsiveness is no longer the
problem it used to be in intrepid.
