I also find that if I boot my Acer Aspire One netbook from a USB flash drive running an Ubuntu 10.04 alpha 3 live version then immediately select Sound Preferences -> input, the level bars show activity from the microphone. However, if I move the slider for input volume (it starts at the unamplified level) the input level bars stop showing activity. When no activity is shown, the microphone wont work with skype. Sound recorder still works though.
