crazybyte: you might try Geir Ove Myhr's kernel #599; see Comment #59 at bug 447892<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/447892/>. It's stable for me on an Intel 855; incl. compiz, dual-head, kms, etc.; might work for you too.
It's frozen in time, of course; I'm deferring kernel updates until ... well, hopefully not too much longer.
