This may be a function of the way digital audio is approached in SPDIF world. In an optimum quality playback setting the only thing controlling your actual listening volume should be your amp, not the main volume control on your desktop. In digital audioland, audio sources would be set to unity volume if possible so as to take complete advantage of the complete bitstream's dynamic range... assuming 24bit/48k for SPDIF.
