Ah, the indicator-sound package was not installed. The problem is that
I've been using synaptic to upgrade packages. I know that it's been
"deprecated". It's just that some times the update-manager removes
packages that I want to keep (e.g. xscreensaver) without showing or
informing that this will be done (I wish it was different, that way I
could rely on the update-manager). I just don't like that because I
really want the packages I install to remain unless I know that they are
being removed.

After installing the indicator-sound package, and adding the indicator
applet to one of my panels, the volume control now appears.

As an after thought, I would suggest that the icons in the indicator
applet be closer together (as in the notification area applet where the
icons are closer together). That way it doesn't take precious space up
from the other applets in the panel (such as a window list applet that I
tend to keep both in the top panel and the bottom one for careless
access to windows). Thanks a lot for helping.
