Default in menu.lst changed from 0 to 2 (after new kernel) resulting in attempted loading of old kernel. On changing Default back to 2 I have to do one time entry of password. I'm using karmic having upgraded from hardy via ibex & jaunty. It was OK in jaunty. I suggest that this should be fixed for lucid upgrade or that lucid upgrade should do automatic upgrade from grub to grub2.
