My bug ( https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/533039 ) was marked a duplicate of this one. Note that this bug report states that the problem disappears after a reboot, while mine does not. I get sound from vlc only if run as root or with the user in the audio group, which is not the default for *buntu lynx
