I also have this problem. I also got a error message in /var/log/daemon.log like this from Florians log file:
> Nov 7 20:37:05 10trumderm8 nm-dispatcher.action: Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error status 1. No, it does not cause the misbehavior of the applet. The script /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown doesn't know about the up and down events for vpn connections vpn-up and vpn-down. This causes the above error message. I fixed the problem in the script, but this doesn't change the behaviour of the applet.
