Hi, I have a similar problem. I can't burn cds/dvds in Karmic 9.10. I tried command line, brasero and gnome-baker, using an internal and external drive. None of them works. I booted into a different distro on the same machine - and all went well, I was able to burn a dvd - so it's not a hardware issue. When using brasero, it just can't see a blank dvd in the drive, same for gnome. Also, usually gnome after inserting a blank cd/dvd asks what to do with it, in my case this didn't happen.
